What are Shirt Studs?

Monday, 5 August 2013  |  James

Shirt studs are decorative fasteners often made from precious metals such as sterling silver, set with stones; onyx and mother of pearl being the most popular, but almost any stone can be used to decorate the shirt stud.

Shirt studs fit into the buttonhole that can be found on the front of specially made pleated shirts, or the starched bib, on the front of stiff shirts.

Shirt studs were first used in the mid 1800's when many shirts were far to stiff to close with regular buttons, even though they are less common now days, they are still used on some men's formal wear, and semi-formal wear.
